Formula for the arithmetic average

The mathematical formula for calculating the arithmetic average.

Average = (Value₁ + Value₂ + ... + Valueₙ) / n
Example calculation

Grades: 2, 3, 1, 2, 3. Average = (2 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 3) / 5 = 11 / 5 = 2.2

All values are added together and divided by the number of values (n). The result is the mean.

What is it?

What is the arithmetic average?

The arithmetic average (also called mean) is the sum of all values divided by their count.

The arithmetic average is the simplest and most commonly used measure of the mean of a dataset. It is calculated by adding all values and dividing by the number of values.

Unlike the weighted average, the arithmetic average treats all values equally - each value has the same weight.

Application examples

When to use arithmetic average?

Practical examples for everyday school use.

  • Tests without weighting: When all tests have equal weight: Grades 2, 3, 2. Average = (2+3+2)/3 = 2.33
  • Report card grade: The average of all grades in a subject gives the report card grade (if no weighting applies).
  • Performance comparison: The average allows comparing performance across different subjects or students.
Frequently asked questions

FAQ - Arithmetic Average

What is the difference from weighted average?
In arithmetic average, all values count equally. In weighted average, some values have more influence than others.
When is arithmetic average appropriate?
When all values have equal importance - e.g., tests without different weighting.
Can the average be a decimal?
Yes, the average is often a decimal, e.g., 2.33 for grades 2, 3, 2.
How is the average rounded?
In Swiss schools, rounding is usually done to one decimal place or to half grades.
