Weighted average calculation

How to calculate weighted average?

For weighted average, you need grades and their weights. Use our calculator or calculate manually:

  1. 1 Collect grades and their corresponding weights.
  2. 2 Multiply each grade by its weight.
  3. 3 Add all products together.
  4. 4 Add all weights together.
  5. 5 Divide sum of products by sum of weights.

Weighted average formula

Weighted Average = (Grade1 × Weight1 + Grade2 × Weight2 + ...) / (Weight1 + Weight2 + ...).Example: (5 × 3 + 4 × 2) / (3 + 2) = 4.6

Arithmetic average calculation

How to calculate arithmetic average?

For arithmetic average, add all values and divide by count:

  1. 1 Add all grades together.
  2. 2 Count the number of grades.
  3. 3 Divide sum by count.

Arithmetic average formula

Average = (Grade1 + Grade2 + Grade3 + ...) / N.Example: (5 + 4 + 3 + 6) / 4 = 4.5

Scientific perspective

What does Wikipedia say about weighted average?

The weighted average is a generalization of the arithmetic mean and provides a characterization of a set of statistical data for the case where the values of the set have different significance, different weights. It is especially used to calculate the general arithmetic mean of a set that consists of several subsets. To calculate the weighted average, we need both the values whose average we want to calculate and their weights.
